What do people around the world think when they hear the words: South Africa?
And perhaps just as importantly, how do we, as South Africans, see ourselves?
These were some of the questions that stayed with me after attending Brand South Africa’s 2026 Research Launch.
I really enjoyed the morning. Not only because the research was insightful, but because it made me pause and think about something I am particularly passionate about, the power of perception, storytelling and reputation.
Brand South Africa’s latest research brings together two important perspectives.
The Global Reputation Study explores how international audiences perceive South Africa, while the State of the Nation Brand Report captures how South Africans themselves experience and view our country. Together, they provide a fascinating picture of a nation that is resilient, creative and full of possibility, while still very much shaping its story.
And that last part really resonated with me.
Because a brand is never finished.
Whether we are talking about a person, a business or an entire country, reputation is built through what we say, what we do and, most importantly, what people experience.
As someone who has spent many years working in marketing, communications and events, I find nation branding fascinating.
South Africa has an extraordinary story.
We are a country of incredible people, diverse cultures, entrepreneurial spirit, creativity, innovation, natural beauty and resilience.
But we are also a country navigating challenges.
Both things can be true.
And perhaps that is why research like this matters.
It gives us an opportunity to look beyond the headlines and ask:
What is the story we are telling?
Is it an accurate reflection of who we are?
What are we doing well?
And where do we still have work to do?

For me, South Africa’s story should never be about pretending that everything is perfect.
It should be about honestly recognising our challenges while also making space for our possibilities.
There is so much good happening here.
There are entrepreneurs building businesses from the ground up.
Young people creating innovative solutions.
Artists, filmmakers and creatives taking South African stories to global audiences.
Women creating their own opportunities.
Businesses collaborating across industries.
Communities finding ways to keep moving forward.
And ordinary South Africans who continue to show an extraordinary amount of resilience every single day.
That is also our story.
And I think we have a responsibility to tell it.
Not through glossy marketing alone, but through the experiences we create, the businesses we build, the way we welcome people, the products we develop, the stories we share and the way we show up in the world.
Because ultimately, reputation isn’t just something you communicate. It’s something you earn.
This is particularly relevant to me through the Fability lens.
I believe strongly in meaningful marketing, marketing that goes beyond simply getting attention.
It’s about connection.
It’s about creating experiences.
It’s about telling stories that people can relate to.
And it’s about understanding that what we put into the world contributes to the bigger picture of how people see a brand, a community or even a country.
South Africa is still shaping its story.
And perhaps that’s the exciting part.

The story isn’t finished.
We get to contribute to the next chapter.
So, I left the event feeling both reflective and optimistic.
Proud of where we come from.
Realistic about where we are.
And excited about where we can still go.
Because I genuinely believe South Africa has so much more to say, show and offer the world.
And I, for one, would rather be part of shaping that story than simply watching from the sidelines.
Here’s to a South Africa that continues to tell its story, with honesty, confidence, creativity and purpose.
