Some events stay with you long after they end, not because of the venue or the programme, but because of what they represent.

The launch of “Unfolding the Untold Stories of Gauteng: Disability, Democracy and Human Dignity” at Hotel Sky in Sandton on 3 December 2025 was one of those moments for me.

It was more than just an event marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It was a powerful reminder that storytelling is one of the most impactful tools we have to drive change, shift perspectives, and honour lived experiences.

Having collaborated with the Premier’s Office team over the years, it was truly an honour to witness their vision come to life through this publication. What started as an idea, to document voices often unheard, became a meaningful, beautifully curated, that reflects resilience, dignity, and the ongoing journey of democracy in South Africa.

There is something incredibly powerful about creating space for stories that are often overlooked.

This e-book is not just a collection of narratives, it is a statement. A statement that every voice matters. That every journey holds value. And that inclusion is not just about policy, but about representation and recognition.

As highlighted in the foreword by Premier Panyaza Lesufi, this publication serves as both a celebration and a challenge. A celebration of progress, of how far we’ve come in recognising human dignity and inclusion. And a challenge, to continue building a society that is truly accessible, equitable, and representative of all.

That message resonated deeply with me.

Because in the work we do through Fability, we see firsthand how important it is to move beyond conversations and into action. To not only acknowledge barriers, but actively work towards removing them.

Why This Matters

For me, this moment was about more than attending a launch. It was about witnessing a shift. a growing commitment to ensuring that disability inclusion is not an afterthought, but part of the broader narrative of our country’s growth. When stories like these are documented, they become part of our history. They challenge perceptions, inspire others, and create space for future voices to rise.

And perhaps most importantly, they remind us that behind every policy, every initiative, and every conversation, there are real people, real journeys, and real impact.
